Why water is turbid

What gives water its color


Water can be both colorless and with shades: white, yellow, brown, green, red, gray. The hue and its intensity depends on the dissolved organic substances and inorganic compounds in the water, as well as on their quantity.

The yellowish or brown color of the water is usually due to clay, humus or peat. If the water is opaque, then the cause may be fine sand, which can be seen in the sediment.

Transparent but bright yellow, green or reddish water is caused by algae and phytoplankton.

If the water initially appears clear, but when settling changes color from yellowish to almost red, it indicates the presence of organic iron, and the more it is, the darker and more intense the color.

When the water has a whitish hue, and it partially precipitates during sedimentation, it is a sign of limestone or white clay.


Why does the water smell bad

The intensity of the smell is determined by a person's sense of smell, and there is a special scale in which the most strongly pronounced smell is indicated by the number 5, and the absence of smell - the number 1.  The consumer should know that if he feels the smell not immediately, but only after another person points out its presence, such water has a score of 2 and is still suitable for drinking.

The smell of water comes from various gases, organic and inorganic compounds; it can be of natural or artificial origin.

Water smells of natural origin: swampy, muddy, earthy, putrid, fecal, hydrogen sulfide (smell of rotten eggs). They arise in the process of vital activity of plants and microorganisms, as well as due to the influence on the water of river banks, soils, soil, decaying organics and some agricultural runoff.
