Home tooth whitening: 11 easy methods

With age, human teeth become less white. Below are 11 ways that can help get rid of tooth plaque at home. They are an alternative to dental whitening options that a dentist can offer.

  1. Regular Brushing

This is most important after eating or drinking, which can discolor teeth such as red wine, coffee, blueberries, or beets. There are a few basic tips for getting your teeth cleaned properly:

Brush your teeth 2-3 times a day;

  • each brushing should take at least 2-3 minutes;
  • be sure to brush every surface of every tooth;
  • brush each tooth thoroughly in a circular motion;
  • do not brush the gums or brush them very carefully.

  1. Whitening toothpaste

Whitening toothpaste can help reduce the yellowing of teeth and improve whiteness. These cosmetic products contain more active ingredients than standard toothpaste, which helps remove the contamination of teeth. Whitening toothpaste does not contain a whitening agent but may contain small amounts of urea peroxide or hydrogen peroxide. These chemicals bring back the whiteness of your teeth.

According to a 2018 study, whitening toothpaste typically brightens the color of teeth by one or two shades.

  1. Special whitening

Some dentists offer tooth whitening with a plate, but these options are also available for home use. This method of whitening teeth involves using a plate that contains whitening gel and is worn for 2-4 hours a day or overnight.

The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends using products that contain 10% carbamide peroxide.

  1. Bleaching strips

The bleaching strips are covered with a thin layer of peroxide gel and glued to the surface of the teeth. Depending on the type of strip or its manufacturer, the way the strip is used changes. On average, you should use the strips 2 times a day for 30 minutes.

  1. Rinses

Whitening with rinses is another way to get rid of the yellowing of teeth. Whitening rinse fluids contain sources of oxygen, such as hydrogen peroxide. They react with tooth staining compounds to help "detach" them from your teeth.

Rinsing with whitening fluids 2 times a day for 1 minute for 3 months can lead to 1-2 shades of tooth lightening.

  1. Activated charcoal

Toothpaste that contains activated charcoal can help to get rid of the yellowing of teeth. However, toothpaste containing charcoal should be used with caution as they can cause staining, and charcoal can be difficult to remove from gaps in teeth and areas around fillings.

  1. Baking soda and hydrogen peroxide

Using toothpaste that contains soda and hydrogen peroxide can help reduce yellowing. You can make toothpaste at home by mixing 1 tablespoon of baking soda with 2 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide.

  1. Vitamin C

A study conducted in 2017 showed that vitamin C deficiency can provoke peridontitis - bacterial growth on the teeth and gums that leads to discoloration of teeth and their yellowing. It follows that adding vitamin C to toothpaste can help reduce discoloration of teeth.

I think you will be interested to know that vitamin C is not only useful for whitening teeth, but also for body and hair. You can read more about this in the article Vitamin C shower head in USA.

  1. Fruit enzymes

Adding certain fruit enzymes to the toothpaste will help whiten teeth. In a 2019 study, it was shown that toothpaste containing papaya enzyme and bromelain enzyme from pineapples helps to remove stains on teeth.

  1. Apple cider vinegar

A study conducted in 2017 showed that apple vinegar has a bleaching effect on teeth. It should be noted that this study was conducted on animals. However, it should be used with caution, as apple cider vinegar can damage the surface of teeth if used frequently.

  1. Extraction of coconut oil
A study conducted in 2019 showed that the use of coconut oil can be an effective way to reduce plaque formation. However, more research is needed to determine the extent and speed with which coconut oil can whiten teeth.
